What a night looks like

The doors open at 5:30 p.m., and folks start arriving early. Part of the tradition is sharing a meal, but just as important is catching up with neighbors and hearing about everything that's happened since the last dance. As soon as you walk through the doors, you're greeted by the unmistakable aroma of a feast that could feed an army—tables filled with the kind of homemade Appalachian comfort food that's become a tradition all its own.

Between the laughter, conversations, and the familiar sounds of the fiddle, banjo, guitar, and bass tuning up, the hall comes alive. Around 6:30, Will Bowling steps to the microphone, welcomes everyone to the floor, and calls the first dance. From that moment on, the music takes over, and another unforgettable evening begins.

No experience is required. You don't have to know a single step. Around here, most people learned from family, friends, or by simply joining in. (If you grew up in Blackey, though, you may have learned from the legendary Irene Thomas in school) Will walks everyone through each dance, and before long an experienced neighbor will have you smiling, laughing, and moving with the music.

You'll see children laughing as they learn to flatfoot, young couples discovering the joy of their first square dance, and familiar faces who have been coming through these doors since the 1960s. Some of our elders may spend more time sharing stories than dancing these days, but don't be surprised when the music pulls them back to the floor for a two-step or a flatfoot jig.

As the evening winds down and the first notes of the Virginia Reel fill the hall, everyone knows what it means. It's the final dance of the night—a tradition that has brought generations together and one that sends folks home already looking forward to the next month's gathering.

Coming for the first time

Come as you are—this is a community hall, not a ballroom. Bring a little cash for the admission donation, a meal donation, or to try your luck in the cake walk. Be sure to check out our souvenirs, too—every purchase helps keep the lights on, the music playing, and this tradition alive.

Bring the kids. Bring your friends. And if you're the kind of person who brings a dish to share, we'd be delighted to have it.

The road up the mountain is narrow and winding. Give yourself extra time, and don't count on cell service once you turn off the main road :) 

Good to know

• Come as you are. Fancy clothes aren't required—comfortable shoes and a smile are all you need.
• Carcassonne City Ordinance #3408: On a night of a square dance, everyone must dance... or at least give it an honest try. 😉
• Family-friendly and alcohol-free. Everyone is welcome, from toddlers to grandparents.
• Live acoustic music at every dance. No recordings—just talented local musicians keeping Appalachian traditions alive.
• Parking is available on-site and in the back lot. Arrive early for the best spots and plenty of time to visit before the music starts.
